The Process of Coming Out
Understanding the Mental Health of our Students
The level of support that people perceive in their surroundings when they come out as lesbian, gay, or bisexual is closely related to their mental health and overall well-being, People come out in places where they feel supported and they do better in terms of more self-esteem and less depression. Studies have found that concealing one's sexual orientation can have consequences for both mental and physical health. Coming out is a period of vulnerability for LGBT people -- particularly youth.
As student affairs professionals, we must continue to better understand that coming out and living openly aren’t something you do once, or even for one year. It’s a journey that one makes every single day of his/her life. Every coming out experience is unique and must be navigated in the way most comfortable for the individual.
