The LEAD Center Director is a critical position that serves in an administrative, supervisory, advising, and programmatic capacity. The newly developed LEAD Center is focused on providing services and resources focused on leadership, personal and professional development, student organization advising, working with diverse communities of students, staff, faculty, and campus community stakeholders. LEAD is the one stop shop for student organizations needs such as registration, funding, and advising. This position is responsible for those that recognize and provide advising, student leadership, and development services to approximately 1,300 University registered campus organizations. These organizations include the Recruitment and Retention Centers, Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC), Graduate Assembly (GA), Bridges Multicultural Resource Center, Cal Debate, Committee on Student Fees, Fraternities and Sororities, Student Leader Training and Development, Student Publication Groups, Superb, and The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF).
With more than 55% of undergraduates participating in student groups and one of the largest and most complex student governments in the country, this position is a critical member of the ASUC Auxiliary. The Director serves as an advocate and representative on behalf of students groups and their needs to campus departments, administration and with community stakeholders. The Director also participates in high-level campus wide and departmental committees and task forces representing departmental and student interests.
Responsibilities
Personnel management: Oversee a well-trained, student-oriented staff that is focused on providing excellent service and programs. Ensure that all staff know and understand applicable policies and procedures as they relate to their role on the team. Promote and support individual and team staff development. Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate a team of Assistant Directors and Coordinators based on department standards, timelines, and procedures.
Student group advising and services: Design, implement and supervise advising services for all campus student group leaders utilizing student development and leadership practices, including activism support. Utilize established leadership competencies to regularly assess impact of programs and services and make necessary modifications to ensure consistent alignment with LEAD Center framework/philosophy for student advising and leadership. Oversee existing leadership programs and initiate new programs for members of registered campus organizations and recruitment/retention centers that meet student group needs. Develop and maintain collaborations with campus and community stakeholders to design services that meet the needs of underrepresented student communities.
Advocacy and support: Advocate for the current needs of students with campus departments, administration, and community stakeholders. Recommend and establish changes to policies, practices, and procedures that affect the program through collaborative efforts with staff and students. Serve as a liaison among students, campus departments, and administration in both daily operations and highly sensitive situations.
Policy articulation: Provide information on campus regulations and use of campus facilities to students, student groups, and campus community members. Identify alternatives and encourage compliance when appropriate.
Fiscal Management & Administration: Manage operational and personnel expenses within an established budget during the fiscal year for LEAD Center. Ensure resources are used efficiently and effectively; administrative tasks are handled appropriately; and monthly/annual reports are compiled and submitted according to due dates. Contribute to department wide strategic planning and report writing.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of Student Affairs/Student Life specialization, Student Development and Leadership Theory, advising/counseling techniques, dialogue facilitation, conflict mediation, and experience developing and assessing student learning outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively one-on-one, in small groups and in public speaking contexts, and a willingness to facilitate open and effective communication, cooperation, and teamwork within and outside of one's own team.
- Experience designing, implementing, and facilitating training for leadership, customer service, personal development retreats, workshops, and programs for full-time staff, student staff, interns and graduate assistants.
- Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with, and prioritize competing demands for students, professional staff, Division colleagues, and the University community.
- Experience creating an environment of understanding and acceptance while challenging organizational policies and practices that may be exclusionary, in addition to skills in reasoning, developing original ideas to solve problems, persuasion, leadership, and intercultural competence.
- Demonstrated experience planning, organizing and scheduling in an efficient, productive manner, and the ability to target projects or initiatives that require special attention. The ability to focus on key tasks with limited time and/or resources, and to work effectively in an environment in which the parameters may change daily requiring the adjust behavior to meet the needs of different people and situations.
- Experience monitoring/assessing people, processes, or services required for efficient service operations
- Demonstrated success following through on commitments while incorporating courage, objectivity, trustworthiness, honesty, respect and fairness in daily actions.
- Experience with budgeting and financial decision making. Must have strong communication and writing skills, and excellent administrative and organizational skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in related area or equivalent experience.
- Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs, departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
- Knowledge of University policies, processes, and procedures.
- Master’s degree in related area

The salary range for this position is $63,900 - $94,800 (midpoint).
