High School College Counselor Position

High School College Counselor

Description:

The HS College counselor will provide direct support and services to all students in the areas of academic achievement and career development.  He/She will be responsible for administering all aspects of the college search including assisting incoming high school students with entrance applications, scheduling standardized testing, providing information on academic and vocational programs, and advising on class schedules. He/She will respond to questions posed by both students and parents about the college application and acceptance process. They will also explain the financial aid process and advise students on available scholarships.

START DATE:    ASAP                                                     SALARY:    $50,000-$55,000/yr     BENEFITS: Health care and State Teachers Retirement System

Essential Functions:
  • Develops, implements, and oversees overall High School college counseling and guidance program in accordance with state standards
    • Academic Achievement
  • Assist in developing, reviewing or revising a career and education plan for each student.
  • Provide individual counseling for students regarding scheduling upon request of the student or hi/her parent/guardian.
  • Meet with students individually or in groups to discuss credits, courses and entrance exams required by colleges and technical schools.
  • Advise students regarding the accuracy and completeness of records and credits and perform periodic credit checks from grades 9 through 12 with an emphasis on the senior year.
  • Monitor and advise students and parents regarding progress toward graduation.
  • Inform parents and students of test results and their implications for educational and career planning
  • Provide info to students needing to attend summer programs to make up credit deficiencies.
  • Educate students and parents about college admissions process, trends, procedures, and testing
  • Support students and families as they go through this process
  • Meet with juniors and seniors to talk about process and individual college choices.
  • Help students with writing marketable admissions essays, obtain letters of recommendation, and prepare for college interviews.
  • Help students choose degree programs based on their interest and aptitudes.                
  • Advise 9th and 10th graders on curricular choices, as needed and work with international students and their families,  to understand the US college admissions process
  • Provide students with resources on vocational/technical, career, college information and work.
  • Maintain a library of catalogs, pamphlets and directories from colleges, technical schools and military academies.  This information includes forms, scholarship information, financial aid information, military services information and occupational briefs.
  • Provide information to parents/guardians and students that relate to the testing dates, college visits, deadlines for filing applications, recruiter visits.
  • Coordinate individual visits form college representatives.
  • Maintain information on institutions that offer scholarships.

Other Duties:
  • Work closely with records clerk at the High School to maintain records on seniors, including GPA’s and transcripts.
  • Keep track of admission decisions, test results and statistics.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to promote effective communications and interpersonal relations among staff, parents, students and community members
  • Overall willingness to support school-wide initiatives to fulfill CNCA mission

Required Qualifications:
  • BA/BS is required, PPS Credential required
  • At least 2 yrs experience in college admissions or high school college counseling
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Experience working with low-income and/or minority children.
  • The ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse and demanding student and parent population
  • Knowledge of colleges, their academic programs, admission policies, and financial policies and procedures.
  • Ability to set goals and develop systems for data tracking progress towards goals.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Fluent in Spanish.
