Job Description Title: Academic Advisor

Basic Function: To advise students in the development and completion of their academic and career goals at the University.
This position will be advising Speech Pathology and Audiology AND Athletic Training majors. 
Contract Length: 12 month 
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:    
  • Advise current and prospective students regarding interpretation of placement assessment, curricular requirements related to academic objectives, career options and registration procedures.
  • Approve student requests for a variety of academic actions. 
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of intervention, referral, and retention programs for students; establish and implement referral and follow-up procedures. 
  • Assist with probation, dismissal, and reinstatement procedures; make recommendation on specific cases. 
  • Review student academic progress and recommend specific actions regarding academic and career goals. 
  • Maintain and update student records. 
  • Evaluate transcripts for applicability of transfer credit to Kent. 
  • Present or participate in workshops on academic skills, study skills, and expectations for students in academic difficulty. 
  • Assist students in resolution of difficulties regarding policies and procedures. 
  • May teach and/or coordinate lessons for orientation course. 
  • May train new student advisers. 
  • Represent unit at programs and functions. 
  • Serve on various University committees. 
  • Perform related duties as assigned. 

Leadership and Supervision:     May supervise students and/or provide functional guidance of support staff or other employees who work on a project or assignment on a temporary or intermittent basis. 
Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience, Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)     Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; Masters degree preferred; three months to one year experience in advising or a related field.
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of personal computer applications.
  • Skill in written and interpersonal communication.

  • This position will be advising Speech Pathology and Audiology AND Athletic Training majors.
  • Experience working with a diverse populations is preferred. 
  • Must pass a security check.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; however, hours may vary to meet departmental needs. Occasional evening or weekend may be required. 
Salary Base: 37,416 
Physical Requirements: Light work - exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Typically requires sitting, walking, standing, bending, keying, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Incumbent may be required to travel from building to building frequently and off campus occasionally.
