Department Marketing Statement
   
The Educational Opportunity Program is an alternate admissions program designed for students who may not meet university admission requirements and who are economically and educationally disadvantaged, yet display the desire and potential to succeed in higher education.  Only California residents are eligible for the program.
   
Major Duties
   
Under general supervision of the Associate Director of EOP, the Academic Advisor will perform general up to moderate complex professional student service work in that assignments typically require the application of both knowledge and judgment in using the principles, techniques, standards, guides and professional skills characteristic of the EOP program.  The Academic Advisor for first year programming requires the following skills: basic counseling and interviewing techniques; the ability to troubleshoot and maintain the EOP database, web site, server and office computers; sound judgment to recommend solutions to problems and changes in program procedures; assure student compliance with EOP guidelines related to E0665, organize, plan and implement Informational Sessions for incoming students and their parents.
   
Qualifications
   
Required Knowledge and Abilities:   
Knowledge of the California State University System admissions and course pattern requirements; use of SAT and ACT scores in evaluating transcript files;  California State University System general studies requirements and grade records from high schools, community colleges and other universities; computer databases and their use in report writing; academic advisement strategies.

Additional Knowledge and Abilities Preferred:   
Ability to advise students in group and individual settings; use technology in an academic setting; communicate effectively, orally and in writing; supervise the work of and train support staff; interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data; make verbal or written presentations; and establish and maintain
effective working relationships with others.

Skill in:  Computing grade point averages from transcripts and test scores; working with group dynamics and other counseling strategies; effectively writing and speaking in small and large group settings, and proficient in computerized databases.

Education & Experience:
Experience:  Two (2) years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field.  Experience with a university Educational Opportunity Program or educational equity program, or academic advising in a college setting. 

Education:    Equivalent to graduation form a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. 

Preferred:  Masters in counseling in higher education and/or students affairs, or related field.  The ability to communicate in Spanish.

Experience or Education Substitutions:
Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
