The incumbent is responsible for advising all graduate students of procedures to be followed in obtaining the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Incumbent completes all necessary paperwork on behalf of all students to obtain advanced degrees, manages administrative aspects of TA selection, budgeting, placement and mentoring; prepares ad hoc reports for all committees relating to degree progress, coordinates the annual awards process for continuing graduate students, maintains files on all graduate students, and maintains the graduate database. Advises students of their rights and responsibilities in the department and, as appropriate, advocate on their behalf.

1. Skill in interacting with persons of varied social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds, especially in advising students and working with faculty, staff, graduate students, others in the University and in the outside community.

2. Skill in developing procedures to quickly and accurately assess individual student progress or lack thereof.

3. Detailed knowledge of both general University, Graduate Division and departmental regulations, policies and procedures.

4. Skill in coordinating people and activities in high-volume office with frequent interruptions and/or distractions.

5. Skill in design and utilization of database programs to store information. Ability to generate reports and serve important role in proposing improvements to database design.

6. Knowledge of the discipline of history, the content of courses offered in the department, the unique requirements of 12 fields, and the areas of expertise of faculty members in the department.
