UCLA Seeking Program Director for Project SPELL



UCLA Government & Community Relations' Volunteer Center is looking for a Program Director to run the Project SPELL program. Project SPELL, Students for Progress in Employee Language Learning, is a support service for UCLA employees who are non-native English speakers. This program matches UCLA employee learners with student volunteer tutors to accomplish English language learning goals as expressed by the learners.

Position Summary
Under the general direction of the Director of the UCLA Volunteer Center, develop, implement, and provide administrative support for Literacy, English as a Second Language (ESL), and Basic Adult Education workshops and non-credit programs to support campus employees.

Primary Responsibilities
Design and deliver workshops and non-credit programs to support UCLA affiliate volunteer tutors in their tutoring of campus employees.

Qualifications
1. Knowledge of the professional goals of the departments, specific subject matter, audience characteristics, and requirements as they affect program administration.

2. Skill in designing assessment and evaluation procedures to assess student needs, progress and program effectiveness.

3. Knowledge of field of ESL teaching; Master's Degree in related major, or equivalent combination of education and experience; experience teaching in ESL classroom or Adult Basic Education settings.

4. Ability to make oral group presentations to provide information and explain policies and procedures to groups of participants.

5. Strong interpersonal skills to communicate with students and employees, in writing, on the phone, and in person regarding policies and procedures, and to exchange information and ideas.

6. Ability to work with students, faculty, staff, and clients in a supportive and professional manner.

7. Skill in interacting with persons of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds for the purpose of assisting students, faculty and staff.

8. Skill in writing routine business correspondence using appropriate vocabulary and grammar to obtain information and explain policies, procedures, etc.

9. Skill in prioritizing assignments to complete work in a timely manner when there are changes in workload, pressures of deadlines, and competing requirements.

10. Skill in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction.

11. Skill in coordinating and organizing orientation meetings and events, etc., by determining the time, place, agenda, and sequence of actions to be taken to run the function smoothly.

12. Demonstrated skill in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.

13. Knowledge of campus resources and University procedures.

Continued employment contingent upon completion of satisfactory background investigation.
