THE UNIVERSITY AND DEPARTMENT

THE UNIVERSITY:   California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) is a comprehensive public university that is widely recognized for its polytechnic mission and experiential education philosophy. The Pacific Ocean can be reached in half an hour, and mountain and desert recreation areas are an hour’s drive from campus.
THE DEPARTMENT:  The Office of Judicial Affairs is responsible for ensuring a fair, just, and impartial disciplinary process for students charged with violating the Student Conduct Code, with a goal of providing information and resources to achieve a student interaction that is an educational one for all parties involved.  Judicial Affairs adjudicates both academic and non-academic student conduct violations in an educational and developmental manner.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Assistant Director, Judicial Affairs serves as a Student Conduct Administrator; investigates and adjudicates allegations regarding student behavior within or directly related to the university community in accordance with Title 5 and current Executive Orders governing student conduct.  The incumbent manages student conduct caseloads to be in compliance with Executive Orders governing student conduct;  meets with students, consults with complainants, weighs evidence, recommends settlement agreements or disciplinary hearings following professional, legal, ethical and developmental guidelines and principles; and determines if the student conduct code was violated.  The incumbent holds students accountable for their actions; encourages students to actively participate in the full university experience; adjudicates complaints in an educational, impartial, fair, respectful, consistent and timely manner; and assesses and monitors sanctions.  The incumbent maintains highly confidential student conduct files; consults/collaborates with appropriate university departments as well as faculty, staff, administrators and students; determines effective sanctions that addresses the cause of the inappropriate behavior; maintains supportive and consultative networks with various departments on campus and responds to requests from members of the University community.  The incumbent applies professional judgment in determining notification to appropriate administrators concerning student actions; interprets relevant university policies for members of the community; coordinates community building, student conduct processes and procedures and student conduct training for campus partners; and develops training programs.  The incumbent meets regularly with University Housing Services (UHS) and Foundation Housing Services (FHS) staff to maintain consistency in responding to inappropriate behavior; develops and delivers educational outreach programs for the campus community regarding academic dishonesty and non-academic conduct violation; educates students on the expectations the university has for a community of scholars, the rationale behind those expectations and strategies for being a successful student; and educates the campus community concerning student conduct policies and procedures.  The incumbent manages assessment and evaluation processes; prepares on-going and annual reports on student conduct prevention and adjudication statistics; manages the overall coordination of the student conduct system; serves as a member of the Dean of Students Office team; represents the Director in her/his absence and serves as the Director’s Administrator in Charge; and performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

A master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job-related field AND three years of experience and/or counseling students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.  Experience should also include one year of direct experience adjudicating student conduct cases in higher education setting, a J.D. may take the place of one year experience.  A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship of clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling. Experience working with student development theories and advising students.  For example, the assistant director should have general knowledge of student development theories and experience advising student government leaders or student judicial board members. The candidate should possess superior written and communication skills; excellent skills in conflict resolution; advising and mediation; demonstrated ability to work with a diverse campus population; thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior; general knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Affairs field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of Judicial Affairs; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge; and general knowledge of the organizational procedures and activities of Judicial Affairs.  The candidate must have the ability to analyze and manage complex situations, and to adopt effective courses of action. These situations may include individuals who are argumentative or confrontational, and interaction which are sensitive; manage a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions, and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

One year in the program area to which assigned is preferred. The ability to interact with students, faculty, administrators, police, staff, and community members in a collegial manner to resolve highly charged matters that arise; knowledge of CSU policies and procedures and laws affecting judicial decisions including Title V Section 41301 and 41303 of the California Code of Regulations, CSU Executive Orders, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Title IX, VAWA/SaVE Act, and Title II; and managerial experience in higher education is desirable.
