Position Information:
This Academic Advisor III position, under general direction, serves as the lead and/or expert advisor for the SoBA Undergraduate Program. The incumbent provides comprehensive advanced operational support while advising students on complex issues related to academic, career and life goals. The incumbent provides resolution recommendations on a wide scope of academic advising matters. The Academic Advisor III supervises the student academic advisors.
Performs advising duties that are based on theories and knowledge of teaching, learning and human development, reflect developmental and demographic profiles of the student population, and respond to the needs of individuals, special populations, and communities.
Assists students in the development of meaningful education plans; promote student intellectual and personal development; discuss and clarify educational, career and life goals; help students to acquire relevant information and services; interpret institutional, general education, and major requirements; evaluate and monitor student academic progress, course choice, and class schedule in context of student's life and career goals.
Advises on all aspects of their academic experience, applying advanced academic advising concepts and experience, identifies and refers for resolution intricate student issues/grievances such as alleged discrimination, complex grade dispute issues, academic probation or dismissal, and students' personal crises.
Approves/denies students planned class schedules and various petitions. May recommend petition exceptions that affect the requirements of multiple departments. Participates in new student orientation activities.
Analyzes the consequences of departmental/school/college academic policies and recommends new or changed policies. Advises chair on the formulation of department policy by advising on areas needing clarification and identifying solutions. Coordinates, reviews and advises chair on transferability and applicability of non-UC Riverside courses and/or courses on campus within or outside of the department that may affect ongoing requirements.
Engages in the evaluation of student diagnostic exams related to learning styles, career goals and academic stressors; partner with campus student support centers regarding internships and supplemental instruction; analyze student information system data to better understand the academic challenges faced by their particular student populations.
Minimum Requirements:
Master's degree and 3-5 years of academic advising or related experience; or equivalent combination of education & experience with minimum 3 years experience in student advising in an academic institution.
Exceptional interpersonal, writing, and oral communication skills used to communicate and advise/counsel diverse personalities. Skill in independently composing professional letters, reports and other materials.
Proven ability to work with a high degree of independence and accountability. Strong time management and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a service environment that is subject to frequent interruptions.
Demonstrated ability to carry out comprehensive responsibilities in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment, including identifying, analyzing, and proposing effective programs enhancements, developing systems, policy and procedures to ensure efficient and effective outcomes.
Knowledge of the applicable federal and state regulations governing areas related to the responsibilities of the position including the Federal Education rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Ability to interpret and administer UC Academic rules (regulated by Executive Committee, Educational Policy Committee and requirements for majors in the college).
Knowledge of administrative deadlines, policies and procedures related to student advising in an academic institution.
Demonstrated experience with developing and implementing guidelines and procedures, preferably related to student advising in an academic institution.
Demonstrated experience using an online student information system. Skill in accurate record keeping with strict attention to detail.
Demonstrated experience with extracting, compiling and interpreting data using statistical analysis techniques, preferably with data related to undergraduate students and instructional data.
Demonstrated computer proficiency in using software applications including spreadsheet, word processing, presentation, data base applications, the Internet, e-mail messaging, and web-based software applications.
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience with online Student Information Systems (SIS+)
Knowledge of the applicable University of California policies governing areas related to the responsibilities of the position.
In-depth and advanced knowledge of SoBA/AGSM academic programs including core requirements and electives.Knowledge of Academic Senate guidelines and
Executive Committee procedures and policies.
