The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate’s education and experience and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed. DUTIES:

The Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) in Readjustment Counseling Service (RCS) serves as a member of a multi-disciplinary Vet Center team and is responsible for coordinating and providing family counseling services. This position conducts assessments interviews, develops treatment plans and provides treatment to eligible veterans and their families. Treatment modalities may include crisis intervention as well as both short and long-term services. May refer clients to other programs and professionals to include the VA Medical Center or Outpatient Clinic. Participates in and provides consultation to other team members; participates in conjoint emergency treatment with medical facility mental health personnel.

Screening/Assessment - interviews veterans and their significant others to determine specific problems. Independently conducts intake and needs assessment of veterans and their significant others and establish helping relationships with clients.

Treatment Planning/Goal Setting - responsible for developing comprehensive and unique goal-directed treatment plans that reflect a course of therapeutic intervention to address the needs identified in the assessment.

Clinical Counseling - provides individual, conjoint, family and group therapy for veterans and significant others.

Outreach - conduct outreach with the specifically to: identify program eligible veterans and their family members, promote the use of the Vet Center services, and present educational program about combat veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs and Readjustment Counseling Service.

Crisis Intervention - provide crisis intervention, stabilization and follow-up for veterans and significant others.

Professional Competency/Education - keep abreast of current state-of-the-art procedures, processes and data-driven treatment approaches.

Referrals - develop and determine appropriate community referral resources in the VA and private sector, and refer veterans and their family members to those available resources.

Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses are not authorized for this position.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
  • Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States
  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English 
  • Education: Must hold a master's degree in marriage and family therapy from a program approved by the Commission  on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) or have graduated from a nationally accredited program conferring a comparable mental health degree as specified in the qualifications standards of those disciplines (Social Work, Psychiatric Nursing, Psychology, and Psychiatry). All additional course work taken to be accepted for MFT licensure must come from a nationally accredited program in one of the above areas. Note: A doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy from a COAMFTE approved program is considered to be a comparable mental health degree.
  • Licensure: Must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to independently practice marriage and family therapy in a State
