SALARY:
$50-$54,000 annual salary (full-time position)

THE UNIVERSITY:
Montana State University-Northern (MSUN), located in north-central Montana approximately 40 miles south of the Canadian border, is a comprehensive university serving approximately 1,300 students in an unusually large geographic region.  It is one of six baccalaureate institutions comprising the Montana University System.  “By the numbers,” as of fall 2012,
  • 90% of students at MSUN are Montana residents;
  • 34% are first-generation students;
  • 12.3% are self-identified as of Native American descent;
  • 13.2% are engaged in NAIA athletics;
  • Enrollment is evenly split between genders (female, 671; male, 611); and
  • Approximately 350 students live on campus in two single-student resident halls and in a student/family housing complex.
The main campus is located in Havre, MT, and offers courses leading to degrees in engineering technologies, professional teacher education, business, nursing, and the liberal arts leading to certificate, associate, baccalaureate and master’s degrees.  Courses are also delivered in Great Falls and Lewistown.  MSUN emphasizes a range of learning delivery options and responds to a wide range of student needs.
THE OPPORTUNITY:
Montana State University-Northern (MSUN) offers the opportunity to an energetic, career-oriented, student-focused professional who seeks to make a significant contribution to the educational environment of an institution that is undergoing significant transformational change.  Within the past year, the university has completed an exhaustive academic program review to ensure that all academic offerings are relevant to the needs of the region—an initiative which will result in the creation of new programs and the maintenance, growth, and elimination of others, leading ultimately to the identification of a specific niche market.  Concurrently, a Student Success division has been created to coordinate student recruitment and retention initiatives, and significant progress has been made in remodeling/upgrading physical facilities. 

The Dean of Student Engagement/Director of Residence Life will spearhead our next major initiative:   to identify, develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive, collaborative approach to student development and involvement.  This initiative will help set the course for the future as MSUN becomes an institution known as a place where students develop skills as life-long learners and productive citizens. 
RESPONSIBILITIES AND AREAS OF OVERSIGHT:
The Dean of Student Engagement/Director of Residence Life will supervise the following full-time employees:  the Director of Student Activities and Events, the Administrative Assistant for Student Engagement, and three housekeepers.  Supervisory responsibility will also include the Director of Student Health Services (a nine-month position) and student employees within the residence halls and the SUB.  Additional responsibilities and areas of oversight include: 

·         Residence Life (including resident assistant selection and training; residence hall programming; and all managerial aspects of residence living)
·         Student activities and events (including intramurals);
·         Student organizations (including Student Government, existing special-interest student organizations, and the cultivation of new student organizations);
·         Student Union (primarily the management of the Student Union Building [SUB], fitness center, and recreation center);
·         Leadership and outreach initiatives;
·         Student conduct;
·         Student Health Services; and
·         Campus identification cards.

This position will report directly to the Chancellor and is a member of the institution’s senior leadership team. 
QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:
·         Minimum of five years’ experience in student affairs administration in any of the following areas:  residence halls, student unions, student conduct, student activities, general student affairs administration (e.g., assistant VP, assistant/associate dean).
·         Master’s Degree in student affairs administration, counseling, higher education, or related field.
·         Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.
·         Demonstrated proven experience in development of or active participation in collaborative projects and activities that focus on student success in a higher educational setting.

Preferred:
·         Demonstrated experience in managing, staffing, and programming in campus residence halls.
·         Demonstrated experience in a public comprehensive university setting.
·         Demonstrated understanding of and appreciation for the learning environment offered by a small rural university.
·         Demonstrated leadership in fostering collaboration and teamwork among various units/divisions in a higher education setting.

THE COMMUNITY:
The city of Havre is located in North Central Montana, the “Big Sky Country,” an area known for its outdoor recreational opportunities and wholesome lifestyle.  Havre is surrounded to the north by great high plains of grain stretching into Canada, the enormous Fort Peck Lake to the east, the Bear’s Paw Mountains to the south, and the Rocky Mountains to the west; a pristine environment in all directions.  Agri business, retail stores, services, farming, ranching and education are the local economies.  Rail and air transportation is provided by Amtrak and Great Lakes.  The metropolitan communities of Great Falls, Montana, 120 miles to the southwest, and Medicine Hat, Canada, 150 miles northwest, offer big city amenities.
