Graduate Internship Program
GLENDALE COLLEGE INTERNSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM
Overview:
Glendale College offers a graduate internship program for students who have completed their first year of graduate school in counseling, psychology, social work, marriage and family counseling, and career counseling at a WASC accredited university program.
This program is currently on voluntary basis; however, students are currently compensated with hours in efforts of completing Master's Degree Fieldwork or Internship program. Graduate Student Interns have special interests in working in counseling departments, in which duties range between learning and understanding academic, career, students with disabilities, as well as teaching in Student Development courses.
The Glendale College Counseling office interviews approximately 10 applicants each year from varying universities, but selects usually three of those potential candidates. This internship is a 1-year commitment, of fall and spring semesters at a minimum of 10 hours per week. Intern duties are, but not limited to:
- Drop-in counseling
- Individual counseling
- Orientation workshops
- Basic Skills presentations
- Student success workshops
- Co-teach STDV 100/101/103
- Complete Student Ed Plans
- Attend counseling division meetings
Students must be in their 2nd year of their master’s program, and must have a background concentration from counseling, rehabilitation counseling, social work, psychology, education, educational psychology, sociology, or Marriage Family & Counseling Therapy.
Training:
Interns are required to complete a 1-week orientation, followed by ongoing 1-hour supervision meetings each week with the program coordinator. In addition, interns are also required to meet with their individual supervisors 1-hour per week, or as needed. Interns attend division meetings to understand academic and campus policy and how decisions are made within the division of College Services. The first semester is geared towards shadowing counselors and learning rules and regulations of matriculation, while the 2nd semester focuses on autonomy with students through appointments and teaching experiences. Finally, interns often have assignments they must conduct for their specific program based on their experience(s) in the counseling office.
Mentors:
The coordinator of the program is Dr. Troy Davis who meets with the interns in group supervision once a week for one hour. Interns meet with their individualized supervisors ongoing throughout the year.
