We would love to invite you to come check out the 9 Dots Community Learning Center. Located in the heart of Hollywood, 9 Dots runs a free after-school program that helps underserved students develop the engineering, language, and creative skills they need to achieve their dreams. 9 Dots runs Monday through Friday from 3pm to 6pm. As a volunteer tutor, you will work closely with our students, supporting and guiding them through homework time in addition to assisting during our hands-on innovation projects. We acknowledge the work we do is not easy, therefore we are looking for hard-working passionate leaders who are excited about empowering and uplifting students!

Do you want to help first-generation high school students apply to college? Sign up to become an I AM Mentor! The I AM program will be working with high school seniors at 10 local LAUSD high schools who are looking to enroll in four-year institutions in Fall 2016.

• Mentors are USC students, faculty, and staff. 

• Time commitment is 3–4 hours a month. 

• The application is now open! The application deadline is Monday, August 31. 

• Work-study funds available for those who qualify.

The IDEAS' 8th Annual Immigrant Youth Empowerment Conference (IYEC), on Saturday May 23rd, 2015. This year's theme is "Isang Bagsak: Cultivating Unity - Even the Greatest Creations Begin with Small IDEAS."

Improving Healthcare Access: Interdisciplinary Service Opportunity with Connecting Californians to Care

My name is Warren Yamashita and I am an Albert Schweitzer Fellow and current MD/MPH student at Keck School of Medicine of USC.  In partnership with the USC Rossier School of Education’s Covered CA Education and Outreach program, I am working to develop an interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate student leadership team to recruit, train and send Covered CA and Medi-Cal student educators to education and enrollment opportunities in Los Angeles, targeting low-enrollment Latino and young adult populations.  Under a larger student coalition called Connecting Californians to Care (CCTC) with UCLA and Charles Drew University, I am building a network of USC student educators before next year's Covered CA open enrollment period that begins on November 15th.  

This past year we had over 150 UCLA and USC students educate consumers about Covered CA and Medi-Cal plans at 7 different enrollment fairs with non-profits, schools and churches.  By augmenting Covered CA Certified Enrollment Entities' education and enrollment efforts with an interdisciplinary student educator force, I hope to fulfill key opportunities for education and enrollment within low-enrollment Latino and young adult populations that in the past have been unreached due to a lack of staff and funding.  This project will also offer healthcare students the unique opportunity to integrate health insurance advisement into a more wholistic model of patient care while working in an interdisciplinary setting to positively impact underserved communities in LA County.  Over the summer I am looking to gather a team of undergraduate and graduate student leaders representing the breadth of USC's programs (ie: JD, MD, MGH, MPH, PA, PT, OT, Pharm, Dental, Undergrad, etc) to facilitate event planning and recruitment and training of student educators next Fall.  Interested students can also participate in a research component of this project. OperationHOPE Seeking Volunteers in the Classroom

OperationHOPE’s Banking on Our Future program elevates the dignity, hope, and economic self-sufficiency of people in low-wealth and under-served communities through financial literacy.  Since its inception in 1996, the Banking on Our Future Program has reached over 725,000 students in more than 700 schools and community-based organizations in the U.S. and South Africa.

We are looking for volunteers to go into the classrooms to teach basic money concepts, such as how to create a budget plan, understanding basic bank products like checking and savings account, and the importance of managing your credit score wisely. We already have an award winning curriculum in place that you would be using.

The participants range from 3^rd grade all the way up to 12^th grade. Volunteers can choose which grade level to volunteer with and how many times to volunteer (as little as 1 time or as many as you want!)

Seeking Mentors and Area Coordinator for Emily Shane Foundation

The Emily Shane Foundation is seeking mentors for their SEA (Successful Educational Achievement) Program, which provides individual mentoring to struggling middle school students, with a focus on, but not limited to, those with processing/learning challenges. Depending on the institution, this opportunity can either be paid or voluntary (as part of a course or internship requirement).

The foundation would also like to hire a mentor who can take on additional responsibilities and assume not only a mentoring position, but help oversee the Program. This position is "Area Coordinator" and pays $15/hr. It involves helping with administrative tasks, ensuring all is running smoothly, help with scheduling, etc.

Seeking Students to Lead Financial Aid Literacy Training Workshops

Tracy Vasilia at the USC Credit Union is hosting financial aid literacy training workshops in some of the USC neighboring schools and is looking for USC students who would be willing to help out at the 32^nd St school on Nov 18^th and some other dates later.  Students would attend a short training workshop next week and then prepare their curriculum for the one day event at the 32^nd St school.  Students willing to work with Tracy on this will be paid $20/hr. 826LA, a non-profit writing & tutoring center, is holding a Volunteer 101: Orientation Training Session to train volunteers on personal statement writing on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 from 3PM - 5PM at USC. This organization works closely with Manual Arts High School and is looking for more volunteers. Additional details regarding the location will be provided shortly. Volunteers Needed for Academic Workshops at Living Advantage, Inc.

Living Advantage, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that works with foster youth around high school and college age. They work alongside USC's Good Neighbors Campaign. They are looking for volunteers to help run educational sessions for workshops that they host. They hold one workshop a month for the remainder of the school year on topics such as academic excellence, college readiness, and life skills. What is Vive Peru? Why do I have to pay to volunteer?

Vive Peru is a nonprofit organization with 501(c)(3) status dedicated to fostering understanding of Latin American and Peruvian culture and providing much-needed aid to Peruvian communities. We work to promote cultural understanding and implement innovative and self-sustainable programs in the areas of health, education, social work and engineering. Our programs, outreach work and direct donations are funded completely through volunteer (tax-deductible) donations, which allow our work to continue and our program to be self-sustainable. In the past 2 years, 207 university students from across the country have joined us to donate 30,780+ volunteer hours and over $32,100 in donated materials and outreach programs to communities in need in Peru.  At local medical campaigns on the coast and in the Andes, we were able to attend to 2607 patients with medical consultations and medications.  We hope you'll join us as we continue to make a difference in Peru.

American Friends Program

Did you know you are studying at a university with more international students than any other college in the nation?  Are you interested in learning more about the international student population, their cultures, and their countries? Sign up to be an American Friend today!

The American Friends Program serves as a part of the The United States: An American Culture Series (a free course about American culture offered to new international students). The program was developed to help both international and domestic students explore more about their cultures and the world. The program serves as a platform for both Americans and international student to take initiatives throughout the semester and learn from each other. As an American Friend you will be responsible for the following:

Role and Responsibilities

·  Build relationships with international students enrolled in the course

·  Connect students with people, resources, events and opportunities at USC

·  Aid students in the understanding of American culture

·  Relate personal experiences and provide a student perspective on course topics

·  Participate in class discussions

·  Communicate with students outside of class  (ie: inviting students to an on/off campus event you are attending)

Time commitments

·  Minimum of 3 classes – dates and times will vary based on class assignment throughout the fall semester

USC Pullias Center I AM Mentors Needed 2013-2014

The USC Pullias Center for Higher Education is looking for volunteers to work with high school seniors and help them get into college!

What is I AM?

Many high school seniors who are eligible to go to college do not attend because they are unaware of their college options or lack the support in receiving information related to the college admissions process. To overcome this issue we have created a mentoring program to provide one-on-one support to guide seniors through the college admissions process helping with college applications, personal statements, and financial aid.

Time Commitment: 2-4 hours a month during the 2013-2014 academic year (September-June).

Mentors may meet with students after work hours or on the weekends.

Mentor orientation trainings will be provided on September 10th and 12th. Prior experience working with high schools students is preferred but not necessary.
