USC MELLON MENTORING AWARDS
Dear Students:
Every April, the University of Southern California recognizes faculty with the USC MELLON MENTORING AWARDS-- a program supported by the Provost. These awards honor individual faculty and programs for efforts in building an effective academic environment through demonstrated excellence in and commitment to mentoring.
We invite you to nominate USC faculty members for recognition as exceptional mentors in one of the following categories:
* Faculty Mentoring Undergraduate Students
* Faculty Mentoring Graduate Students
* Faculty Mentoring Postdoctoral Scholars, Medical Residents, and Fellows
* Faculty Mentoring Faculty Colleagues
You may also nominate a school, department or academic program for the Culture of Mentoring Award. This award recognizes individual academic units for their ongoing commitment to the development and success of effective faculty mentoring programs in those units.
To nominate faculty members or mentoring programs for this prestigious award, please go to http://faculty.usc.edu/mentoring.
All nominations, along with letters of support, are due by 5pm on January 23, 2015.
No paper submissions will be accepted.

We recognize that after four long years of undergrad education, when a person picks up his or her books again to pursue the timeless tradition of Einstein, "Nobel" and Chomsky, it is not an easy path he or she chooses. We plan to highlight the achievements of the graduate and professional students’ community, and send out a big “shout out” to them.

Sunday, March 10th, from 10am to 3pm @ Marina Del Rey
(Daniel's Bicycle Rental-Sale at 13737 Fiji Way, Marina Del Rey, CA 90292)
The Marina Del Rey Bike Ride is filled with fun in the sun for all graduate students and families alike. Graduates will be able to cruise their bikes along 13 miles of ocean front bike paths
Overall the time requirement from the Bike Shop to Santa Monica Pier and back is 1.5 hours for 13 miles.
We will be providing lunch at Venice Beach Park.

The annual graduate research fair held by GPSAW is designed to highlight the fascinating graduate research going on at USC. All students will have an opportunity to ask questions and interact with presenters and a panel of faculty judges will be on hand to judge the posters and award prizes. This event is open to all departments conducting graduate research
Over $300 in prizes will be distributed!

Thursday, March 14th from 3pm to 7pm @ the San Antonio Winery (737 Lamar Street, Los Angeles, CA 90031)
Join us for a tour of the last of more than one hundred producing wineries that once lined the Los Angeles River Basin.
The San Antonio Winery consists of a popular restaurant, a comprehensive tasting room, and aninternational wine shop with hundreds of domestic and imported labels.
If attending you must use the transportation that will be provided.

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day there will be many fun activities for children to participate in like plays, arts and crafts and storybook readings.
Families will have fun interacting with one another going through this amazing journey.
Following the Library, we will walk to Lemonades and each person will receive a free beverage.
Each person is responsible for their own transportation.
Public transportation is highly recommended because parking is scarce.

Student Wins CATESOL Student Research Award
Student Wins CATESOL Student Research Award
Chris Van Booven
TESOL student Chris Van Booven won this year's CATESOL Graduate Student Research Contest for his paper, "A Case for Adult Two-Way Bilingual Immersion."
Van Booven will accept the award at the annual CATESOL conference in Long Beach in April, where he will present his paper. His paper will also be published as a feature article in the upcoming issue of CATESOL Journal. He graduates this year.
