Graduate Student Workstudy Position Available
In Thornton Student Affairs:
Academic Advisor for Undergraduate Music Minors

Thornton Student Affairs, the advising office for the Thornton School of Music, is seeking a graduate student to fill the position of academic advisor for the undergraduate music minors. This position will be funded through workstudy, thus only students who have a federal workstudy award should apply. Further, we are seeking an individual who would be available for at least two academic years (2013-2014 and 2014-2015).

The minor advisor will work an average of 9-10 hours per week, at a pay rate of approximately $13 an hour. 

Responsibilities include: 
 

  • understanding the 7 music minors for USC undergraduates, including music industry, popular music studies, music recording, jazz studies, musical studies, songwriting, and musical theatre;

  • understanding the variety of electives available to minors within Thornton and the backgrounds required for success in these courses;
  • providing academic advising to all admitted music minors (approximately 300) and some who are exploring minors prior to admission through in-person meetings; and

  • fielding inquiries from this population through phone, email, and Skype.


This position requires the following:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities;

  • An undergraduate degree in music (minor or commensurate involvement will be considered);
  • An appreciation of various styles of music; and

  •  Excellent attention to detail and time management skills.

Further, the ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Knowledge of academic advising gleaned through work experience or graduate study;
  • Interest in pursuing advising as a professional career.
