THE DEPARTMENT
Student Support and Equity Programs (SSEP), an organizational unit of the Division of Student Affairs, strives for excellence through a student-centered philosophy. SSEP aims to make a positive difference in the lives of the students through high quality programs and services that promote educational opportunity and support student learning and success.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under general supervision of the Coordinator of Renaissance Scholars, plans, carries out, and evaluates program services that support the academic and personal needs of the students; provide primary academic advising for undeclared and supplemental academic advising for Renaissance Scholars with declared majors; meets with students at least three time each quarter; tracks students' academic progress and commitment to fulfilling requirements as specified in the renaissance Scholars acceptance agreement; assists undeclared Renaissance Scholars in choosing courses to meet general education requirements and prepare for regular academic major by the end of the third quarter attendance; consults with Coordinator to review student appeals; maintains and reviews appropriate files to prescribe appropriate support services including but not limited to tutoring, Disability Resource Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, etc); and assist with SSEP advising activities as appropriate; develop and implement performance based assessment tools for students based on individual educational plans; prepare analytical reports of student progress data; assist to plan and co-lead student activities, including the annual student and staff retreat, year-end banquet, monthly activities for students to promote academic achievement, student contact, campus involvement, and satisfaction to develop community among the students; and co-facilitates SSEP's college success workshops and other activities; assists the Coordinator to plan and co-facilitate the Renaissance Scholars life/study skills seminar for the first-time freshmen transitioning from high school to university. Under the general supervision, provide target outreach and recruitment activities as well as assist with the Renaissance Scholars preadmission/admission process; assist with promoting an informed interest in Renaissance Scholars among prospective students to enlarge applicant pools and to assist in meeting the program's application, admission, and enrollment targets; participate in foster youth-related college fairs, community colleges, group foster family agencies, and other recruitment events to present information and workshops on Renaissance Scholars and the university; arrange campus visits for foster youth and foster care organizations and keeps a running record of youths' participation in outreach events; assist in with the first-level review of application and supplementary forms submitted by prospective Renaissance Scholars students; assist with student interviews to assess their ability and readiness for college, and recommend admissions decisions to Coordinator; participate in Renaissance Scholars team meetings, SSEP advising team meetings, in service training sessions, retreat and planning conferences, and other professional development activities.
QUALIFICATIONS
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavior sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field AND two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field. (A Master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.) Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Ability to advise students individually and in-groups on complex student-related matters; troubleshooting abilities; the ability to develop and implement student services programs; excellent oral and written communication skills; the ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with the diverse constituencies including administrators, faculty, parent, staff and students; and the ability to lead and motivate students in highly diverse and multicultural setting.
Finalists for this position may be required to submit to and successfully pass a background check prior to being hired.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students who come from the foster care system; work collaboratively with the experienced staff and unite around common goals; personal qualities of integrity, flexibility, compassion, and an enduring sense of humor. Experience in the following areas: ability to draw upon expertise and knowledge about foster youth issues to counsel students in the program, interpret CSU admissions and financial aid guidelines, evaluate applications and interview prospective students, and plan co-curricular activities.
