Admissions Counselor I

The USC School of Cinematic Arts (SCA) Office of Student Services seeks an energetic, collaborative and detail-oriented Admissions Counselor to play a key role in the recruitment and admission of prospective SCA students. This position will serve as the first point of contact to prospective SCA applicants by providing information related to the School, programs and application process.
Some job accountabilities include:

  • Counsel applicants on admissions policies and procedures.
  • Respond to inquiries (in person, by telephone and via online communication) sent by prospective students regarding the School and admissions process.
  • Give in-person and online informational presentations regarding the School, programs and admissions process.
  • Assist in the processing/coordination of admission applications for the purpose of review by the faculty of the School.
  • Assist in coordination of admitted student programs.
  • Provide backup support and relief coverage within unit, as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

    Assistant Director of Career Services & Internships - Mount Saint Mary's University (Doheny Campus)

    Job Description:

    The Assistant Director of Career Services & Internships is responsible for assisting students in their preparation for professional employment and graduate or professional school by providing consistent, ongoing support through workshops, presentations, classes, individual appointments and access to career related resources on the Doheny campus. This position reports to the Director of Career Services & Internships and is part of a three person department.
    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    1. Support and assist the Director and Associate Director of Career Services & Internships in achieving departmental goals and objectives.
    2. Provide individual career counseling to students and alumnae.
    3. Plan and implement two one-unit career planning classes per academic year.
    4. Organize, implement and coordinate alumnae panels, professional development workshops, off-campus trips to career-related events, on-campus events (e.g. job and internship fair, graduate school fair, nursing panels, etiquette dinner), and graduate forums.
    5. Maintain current, relevant graduate school information, job listings and internship opportunities on a daily basis.
    6. Collaborate with the Associate Director of Career Services & Internships on projects and programs.
    7. Design bulletin boards, fliers and posters and write short articles for the student bulletin and student publication. Additionally, promote services and job and internship opportunities via social media platforms as well as career planning services and activities to the campus community.
    8. Collaborate with academic and student affairs departments to present career-related information to the students (e.g. etiquette dinner, job and internship fair, etc.).
    9. Collaborate with other on-campus departments such as the Business Office, Admissions, Student Financing, Institutional Advancement, Campus Events, Counseling Psychology Services, and any and all other departments, as needed.
    10. Present career planning information at admissions programs, student orientations, academic classes and other campus activities.
    11. Facilitate on-campus workshops concerning job search techniques, exploring career options, resume writing, interviewing, graduate school options and plans, and other career-related topics.
    12. Maintain data and create reports regarding the progress and activities of the Career Services & Internships Department.
    13. Responsible for overseeing and reconciling budget.
    14. Create and administer content on department's website/portal in addition to troubleshooting and overseeing content on the Mount Career Network, the university's job and internship board, for students and alumnae.
    15. Mentor, train and supervise Career Services' student worker staff.
    16. Mentor, train and supervise Graduate Intern(s).
    17. Assist a variety of constituents from students, to parents, to employers, and to alumnae with career-related questions, opportunities, programs and concerns.
    18. Familiar with interest and skills inventory tools (e.g. Strong Interest Inventory, MBTI, and StrengthsQuest).
    19. Perform other duties as assigned.

    Requirements:


    Qualifications/Requirements:
    • Earned Master's Degree in counseling, higher education or student-affairs related field required.
    • Experience in career counseling, higher education or student affairs.
    • Bi-lingual Spanish preferred.
    • Prior teaching/working experience at university level preferred.

    • Knowledge of Student Development Theory.
    • Demonstrated commitment to cultural diversity.

    Research and Policy Analyst Position, Campaign for College Opportunity

    Research and Policy Analyst

    The Campaign for College Opportunity seeks an experienced Research and Policy Analyst to work on research and policy issues pertaining to California higher education.
    The Organization:
    The Campaign for College Opportunity is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) broad-based, bipartisan coalition, including business, education and civil rights leaders, that is dedicated to ensuring the next generation of Californians has the opportunity to go to college and succeed. Our mission is focused on substantially increasing the number of students attending two- and four-year colleges in the state and who complete their college education. The Campaign maintains offices in Los Angeles and Sacramento.
    The Position:
    Under the direction of the Director of Policy Research, the Research and Policy Analyst will conduct research and analysis to inform public discourse on opportunities for advancing policy reforms related to higher education in California. The Research and Policy Analyst will also play a role in designing new opportunities to keep the Campaign for College Opportunity on the cutting edge of higher education policy driven research.
    The position involves interaction with state and national education experts and advocates, as well as state and federal executive and legislative branch policy staff.
    The successful candidate will have excellent research and data analysis skills and related experience, as well as a demonstrated ability to synthesize policy and research information for different audiences. A strong interest in higher education policy is required.
    This position is based in Los Angeles, California and some travel will be required. The Research and Policy Analyst will report directly to the Director of Policy Research and work closely with staff across the organization.
    Specific roles and responsibilities are detailed below.
    Research and Analysis
    • Conduct research and prepare analysis on issues pertaining to California higher education policy;
    • Gather and catalogue information on college access, completion, financial aid, and equity gaps;
    • Monitor, analyze and catalogue issues and policy proposals pertaining to college access, success,
    equity and affordability, including both state and federal policies;
    • Write reports, memos, briefs, and fact sheets to communicate findings and recommendations;
    • Ensure appropriate peer review and feedback from critical research and organizational partners;
    • Work closely with our graphics designer to produce strong visuals including report design and
    infographics to effectively share report findings;
    • Represent the Campaign at in-person meetings and on conference calls (some travel required);
    • Make presentations, attend meetings and conferences to achieve organizational objectives;
    • Provide limited and focused assistance with grant proposals for new and existing Campaign for
    College Opportunity research and analysis projects;
    Policy and Advocacy
    • Assist in the development of organizational and team policy agendas and priorities as they relate to California higher education;
    • Work with the team to develop policy recommendations, identify opportunities and strategies, and advocate for their adoption;
    • When appropriate, collaborate with other organizations to increase the capacity of the
    Campaign’s work;
    • Assist in responding to external inquiries from the press and others;
    Qualifications
    • M.A. in education research, education policy, or related fields (statistics, sociology, etc.);
    • Two or more years of work experience in public policy and or institutional research;
    • Strong background in education research
    o Experience with American Community Survey (PUMS) files
    o Experience with IPEDS data
    o Experience with survey research (e.g., weighting datasets)
    o Experience with qualitative research (e.g., interviewing)
    o Experience working with a statistical package (e.g., R, SPSS, SAS, Stata). A background with Stata programming is a plus
    o Knowledge of predictive modeling, regression and other advanced statistical analyses is a plus but not required
    • Excellent analysis and synthesis skills;
    • Demonstrated ability to clearly and accurately describe complex issues in ways that different
    audiences can understand;
    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written;
    • Impeccable attention to detail;
    • Knowledge of higher education policy and research issues, as well as an interest in public policy, preferred.
    Compensation

    Paid Graduate Internship Position, CSU Fullerton Career Center
    Internship Commitment:
    Fall 2015- Spring 2016 Academic Year   
    August 3, 2015- May 20, 2016
    Minimum Hours: 10 per week (required)
    Maximum Hours Available: up to 20- hours per week     
    Compensation: $13.50 per hour

    The Career Center partners with students, faculty, alumni, employers, academic programs and graduate schools to build bridges between the distinctive academic programs of the University and diverse professional and graduate education opportunities in the larger community. The Career Center assists students in assessing and defining their work related skills, interests, experience and values to maximize career opportunities consistent with their personal and career aspirations. Services are available to currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students as well as alumni who are within one year of having graduated.

    Position Summary
    Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Career Development, the Graduate Intern (GI) provides frontline drop-in counseling services to students/alumni utilizing the Career Center. The GI is required to apply basic counseling skills, techniques, and career development theory in a practical setting.

    Minimum Requirements
    • Graduate student in an approved Masters degree program in a related field
    • Completed Counseling Theory, Student Development Theory, and/or Career Counseling Theories preferred, but not required
    • Available a minimum of 10 hours per week, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday a maximum of 20 hours per week are offered if interested
    • Attend a Mandatory Paid Training Program: August 3rd –August 21st, Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. a few weeks before the semester begins.
    • Must commit to the entire academic year (Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters)   
    • GI will receive 1 hour of supervision and training per week
    • Ongoing feedback and evaluation will be provided by Supervisor  

    Job Duties & Responsibilities
    • Provides orientation/overview of Career Center to first-time visitors.
    • Refers students to other campus and community resources when assistance is needed beyond the scope of the Career Center.
    • Presents and co-facilitates career related workshops and presentations.
    • Will have the opportunity to work directly with other College Career Specialists on various projects, assignments, and career related workshops and presentations.   
    • Conducts brief intake interviews to determine student’s primary reason for visiting the Career Center.
    • Applies basic counseling techniques and knowledge of the career development process in identifying interventions resources, and services appropriate to the student’s needs.
    • Applies knowledge of career counseling resources, assessments, and strategies in working one-on-one with students making academic and career decisions, exploring options, and preparing for job searches and graduate or professional school.
    • Works individually with students to develop action plans for acquiring academically related work experience.
    • Assists students in evaluating their personalities, skills, values and interests in relation to choosing majors and/or suitable work environments.
    • Becomes knowledgeable of current full-time and part-time job listings, internships, cooperative education and volunteer/community service openings in order to assist students.
    §  Maintains current information on Career Center, program changes, services, policies and events. Critiques resumes, cover letters and other job search correspondence; supports students preparing for job interviews.
    • Incorporates the use of computerized career guidance systems and online resources such as EUREKA, Ferguson, Titan Resume Builder, InterviewStream, Titan Connection Jobs database, online search engines, and other career/job related internet sites. 
    • Makes recommendations to students regarding workshops, orientations, programs and services to enhance their efforts to achieve stated goals.

    Learning Objectives
    • As a result of this internship opportunity graduate interns will gain familiarity with career counseling and advising, career trends, and knowledge of career related resources.
    • Gain hands on experience in working one-on-one with a diverse student population through brief counseling sessions, workshops, presentations, and events.
    • Graduate interns will develop presentation and communication skills through the development of workshops and presentations.
    • The graduate intern will gain experience in implementing career related programs and workshops.
    • Graduate intern will gain professional skills in resume and cover letter writing, job search skills and strategies, interview preparation, salary negotiation, graduate school preparation, and other career related topics. 
    Salary Information
                    Compensation is $13.50 per hour
    Parking Information
    The Graduate Intern will be responsible for purchasing his/her own campus parking permit. The Graduate Intern will have the option to either purchase a semester parking permit estimated at $160-170.00 per semester or purchase a daily parking permit at the rate of $8.00 per day.

    Function: Academic Advising and Related Duties: Provides exemplary academic advising services to students throughout the enrollment cycle – from prospective students to alumni.
    Monitors the academic progress of students throughout their course of study and provides academic advising services to promote successful completion of the degree program. Determines eligibility of students’ graduation from BBA, BAccy, and BS degree programs; reviews and evaluates students’ completion of degree requirements; composes letters to students advising them of graduation status; determines final clearance and compiles data for graduation.
    Maintains student records, to include maintaining degree audits, evaluating transfer credit, enforcing academic policy, and serving as a liaison with various offices to ensure the academic integrity of the student record. Prepares reports as needed, and protects the privacy of student records per FERPA requirements and GW policies.

           Prepare students for the college application process, discussing eligibility for UC, CSU, and private institutions

           Assist students in identifying 4 UCs, 4 CSUs, and 2 private institutions to which they qualify for and would like to apply to during their senior year

           Assist students with UC personal statements

           Impart knowledge regarding services and resources available to students at the postsecondary level

           Help students develop/hone skills necessary for college success such as study skills, self-advocacy, and time management

           Assess student knowledge via pre and post testing, quizzes, projects, etc. 

           Report student progress and behavior to UB staff including program director and program coordinators

           Attend weekly staff meetings


    Qualifications


           Knowledge and/or professional experience in the college preparation process

           Must have experience working with high school students   

           Must have a bachelor’s degree  

           Must have a valid driver's license

           Must enjoy working with high school-aged students

           Available to work Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 AM and 3:30 PM

    UCLA Associate Director of Academic and Research Programs Position

    Associate Director of Academic and Research Programs, UCLA Academic Advancement Program (Academic Administrator)
    Under the direction and supervision of the Director of Academic and Research Programs in the Academic Advancement Program (AAP) at UCLA, the Associate Director (payroll title of Academic Administrator) is responsible for coordinating the administrative and daily functions of direct student services offered in Graduate Mentoring and Research Programs (GMRP) and Peer Learning. The Associate Director is the primary manager and advisor of the Humanities and Social Science Peer Learning Lab, Graduate Mentoring, and the following GMRP cohort-based research programs: Arts Initiative, Community Development and Social Justice, Educators for Tomorrow and UndocuBruins Research Programs. The Associate Director also works with faculty and the Director to organize and execute events and programming that supports academic and research experiences for AAP students that facilitate collaborative learning, academic success, graduation, and preparation for graduate and professional school.  The Associate Director will also teach an undergraduate course during the summer for the AAP Freshman/Transfer Summer Program. Some grant writing and program assessment experience is preferred.

    This is a 100% time (full-time) position, with a projected July 1, 2015 start date.

    A Ph.D. is required; Ph.D. in the Humanities or Social Sciences highly preferred.  Primary qualifications for the position include: demonstrated capacity for leadership, university experience working with AAP-type programs, strong administrative and excellent interpersonal skills, as well as counseling and teaching experience with economically or educationally disadvantaged populations at the university level. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Hiring salary range is $60,024 to $66,096/year.
