The Adelante First-Year Experience Program (FYE) at East Los Angeles College is a pathway designed for first-time students who are committed to academic success and want to advance in their educational goals. The FYE program enables part-time and full time enrolled students to complete their English and Math sequence in one year. Students are enrolled in their courses each semester and are provided with extensive, proactive student support services such as workshops, tutoring and in-depth counseling through the First Year Experience Office.

Career Guidance Counselor Assistant Description Under the direct supervision of the Associate Dean of First-Year Programs and the Program Counselors that oversee the Part-Time and Full Time program, the CGCA serves a critical role in monitoring, guiding, and mentoring FYE students during their first year at East Los Angeles College.

Successful candidates will have strong listening, organizational, presentation, and research skills. The CGCA must also be in tune with an understanding of how to serve a majority Student of Color population that are talented FirstGeneration students. Additionally, the CGCA must also have initiative, motivation, and a strong desire to assist students explore and discover their academic and career options. Applicants must be able to work with frequent interruptions in a fast-paced, high-volume office.

Requirements: Must be enrolled full-time as graduate student in an accredited Master’s degree program in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work (MSW), Education, Career Development, or related field.

Be available to work 20-25 hours per week, between the hours of 8am-5pm and may include some weekend mornings and evenings.

Completed Counseling Theory, Student Development Theory, and/or Career Counseling Theories preferred, but not required.

Must be skilled with using MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Must be able to commit for the East Los Angeles College 2015-2016 Academic Year. Employment Responsibilities

Closely monitor, communicate, and provide follow-up for the assigned 120-125 student caseload.  Be a liaison between the student, their instructors, and the administration of FYE (Counselor and Associate Dean).

Meet on a regular basis with the Associate Dean of First-Year Programs to develop programming and address student success issues.

Update assigned student files. Information that is updated includes: Student appointments, dropin questions, number of student contacts (email or phone calls), student early alerts, follow-up with tutoring services, and when a schedule change occurs.

Assist in coordinating, developing, and facilitating FYE workshops and information sessions.

Collaborate with ELAC’s Student Services division and represent FYE in campus community events.
Participate in weekly FYE staff meetings and/or trainings.

Take part in professional development opportunities, such as the CSU and UC transfer conferences and other trainings developed by the FYE administration.

Participate in FYE student campus visits to four-year institutions in Southern and Northern California.

Participate in FYE outreach and orientation events scheduled throughout the academic year.

Collaborate with FYE Student Services Assistant in various projects.

Collaborate with FYE Student Ambassadors to assure projects and other office duties are complete.

This is a temporary paid internship and position is contingent upon funding $17.49 per hour
