Seeking High School Advisor for Upward Bound

The High School Advisor (HSA) assists low income, first generation students increase their motivation and academic skills necessary for acceptance and success in post-secondary education. The HSA assists in the implementation and operation of the Upward Bound (UB) Federal Grant Programs in Riverside County. Provides academic advising to high school UB participants at their school sites. Monitors academic performance of the UB participants. Assists in the database management and recordkeeping for the program participants. Assists in the planning and supervision of participants on field trips or other activities including the Summer Program. This is a grant funded position. Position is subject to availability of continued grant funding.

We are looking for an individual with some experience advising high school students. Knowledge of higher education institutions and admission requirements is highly desirable. Applicants may be asked to provide a presentation as part of the interview process. This is a grant funded position. Position is subject to availability of continued grant funding. 

  • Must possess a valid driver's license. 
  •  Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of college education and experience. Excellent writing and oral communication skills as well as interpersonal and motivational skills. 
  • Ability to understand the needs of academically and economically disadvantaged students, and establish and maintain effective, trusting, professional relationships. 
  •  Ability to speak to small and large groups of parent/students. 
  •  Ability to work with high school personnel and university staff . 
  •  Demonstrated experience in planning, implementing and coordinating programs and services. Some lifting is required. Must be able to lift a minimum of 35 lbs. Good typing, filing and telephone skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Internet and Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher). 
  • Ability to interpret academic records of participants to make appropriate recommendations. 
  • Ability to develop and coordinate advising and counseling activities for both participants and parents. 
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as scheduled. 
  • Ability to work overnight duty during Summer Program. 
  • Knowledge of higher educational institutions entrance requirements and exams. 
  • Knowledge of financial aid programs offered by the federal and state agencies.
