Student Support and Equity Programs (SSEP), an organizational unit of the Division of Student Affairs, strives for excellence through a student-centered philosophy.  SSEP aims to make a positive difference in the lives of students through high quality programs and services that promote educational opportunity and support student learning and success. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Associate Director participates fully in the overall leadership and management of Student Support and Equity Programs (SSEP); provides advice and assistance to the Executive Director in such areas as strategic planning, budgeting, policy formulation and analysis, grant writing, employee relations and organizational development; seeks out and secures external funding; prepares ad hoc and annual reports, handles special projects and serves as administrator-in-charge in the Executive Director’s absence; and collaborates with the information technology staff of the Division of Student Affairs along with the department of Information Technology (IT) to secure and access various reports.  The incumbent manages a team of professionals in planning, implementing, and evaluating admission, outreach, and enrollment; supervises lead staff and the work of the Admission and Outreach Team in the enhancement and development of the admission and outreach practices and procedures; collaborates with the staff to collect and manage data, student records, and use new technologies to access information and improve admission and outreach; serves as a consultant to the broader campus community on issues related to educational equity, diversity, and student retention and success; and assists staff in formulating individual performance goals and/or work plans.  The incumbent meets regularly with direct report to assess their progress; provides training and professional development opportunities to promote collegiality, teamwork, and skilled and ethical performance; empowers staff to make independent decisions at appropriate operational level; completes performance evaluations; collaborates with the Coordinator, Admission and Outreach regarding admissions, financial aid, and enrollment services; and interviews prospective students and assists in assessing their abilities, readiness for college, and prospect for a successful experience at Cal Poly Pomona.  The incumbent manages a team of professionals in planning, implementing, and evaluating tutorial services; supervises staff and the work of EOP Tutorial Services regarding tutoring, scheduling, hiring, and training of tutors; makes recommendations to the Executive Director; and collaborates with the Tutorial Services Specialist regarding tutorial services.  The incumbent manages a team of professionals in planning, implementing, and evaluating transitional programs and assessment; supervises staff and the work of EOP Summer Bridge and Transfer Bridge regarding scheduling, hiring, and training of all bridge staff; and collaborates with the Coordinator of Transitional Programs and Assessment.  The incumbent manages a team of professionals in planning, implementing, and evaluating the Renaissance Scholars Program; and collaborates with the Coordinator of Renaissance Scholars and staff regarding admissions and support services available to the current and prospective students of the program by assessing their abilities, readiness for college, and prospect for a successful experience at Cal Poly Pomona.  In collaboration with the SSEP Lead staff, the incumbent oversees and manages the EOP Grant; works with staff in the Office of Financial Aid to ensure the appropriate allocation of funds to eligible students; monitors grant allocation reports, student eligibility, and trouble shoot to resolve EOP grant related problems; serves as department’s liaison to Financial Aid; and works closely with the Associate Director of Financial Aid to enhance and fine tune the grant distribution process.  The incumbent represents and advocates for SSEP and its constituents in campus forums and deliberations, in the California State University system, and in the community at large; and performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in student personnel, counseling, psychology, or a related field AND five (5) years of
related experience and demonstrated effectiveness in overseeing academic support and retention services for low-income, ethnic-minority, and/or first generation college students; proven managerial and supervisory skills, strong conceptual and analytical skills, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required.  Knowledge of critical issues impacting higher education, deep commitment to educational equity and student success, and skill in working effectively with multiple and diverse constituencies to create and sustain positive learning experiences for students; excellent interpersonal, public speaking, and written communication skills; strong organizational skills, high level of energy and flexibility, and the ability to handle multiple assignments, manage time effectively, and work independently and as part of a coordinated team; and computer literacy in Windows and MS Office is required. The candidate must have the ability to move frequently from place to place on campus and travel locally, regionally, and nationally to advance the work of the university.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with experienced staff and unite them around common goals; personal qualities of integrity, flexibility, compassion, and an enduring sense of humor.  Experience in at least two of the following areas:  admissions and outreach, enrollment management, summer transitional programs, academic advising, academic support services, teaching, assessment, counseling, and co-curricular activities is desirable.
