Hollygrove is a child-centered, family focused community
organization serving abused and neglected children and those at risk of
abuse. Based on a philosophy of character building values, we help
children and families heal and develop emotionally, physically, intellectually
and ethically. The agency has been serving children since 1880 and has
since contracted with the Department of Mental Health in order to provide more
mental health services to children and their families.
Hollygrove is a community-based agency that primarily
provides individual and family treatment in the homes of the families we
serve. When appropriate, we also provide mental health services to our
clients in the school, as well as on-site in our clinic. Other services
offered entail case management to assist families with supportive services,
including linkages to medical, educational, social and other community
resources. We also provide individual rehabilitation services whereby a
specialist works one on one with the child to assist in developing skills that
further enhance the treatment. Medication support by a board certified
child psychiatrist is available to provide additional assessments and
psychotropic medications to children and offer medication education to caregivers. Students
have an opportunity to gain experience in working individually with children /
adolescents, families and also groups. This agency provides a very rich
clinical experience for a student who is extremely motivated.
The actual training / internship consists of 6 students.
The breakdown is generally 1-2 MFT Trainees, 2-3 MSW Trainees, and 2-3
Pre-Doctoral Practicum Trainees. Each student is provided with 1 hour of
individual supervision and 2 hours of group supervision weekly. We
require at least 20 hours each week. Beginning
September 9th, the required days / times are as follows:
Mondays: 9am to 11am Group Supervision
Wednesdays: 9am to 10am Outpatient Staff Meeting
10am
to 12pm Didactic Training
The internship program at Hollygrove is a 9-12 month
commitment, depending upon the training requirements of the student’s respective
university. It entails 20-24 hours per
week of training, which includes weekly individual and group supervision, as
indicated above. Interns participate in
weekly didactic trainings on various relevant topics, some of which include
building rapport with clients, substance abuse issues, cultural competency, art
therapy and play therapy. Interns are integrated
into the community-based Outpatient Program where they attend bi-weekly staff
meetings. The interns essentially
perform the same function as outpatient clinicians as they provide individual,
group and family treatment to clients.
Interns receive extensive training on medical documentation that is
required by the Department of Mental Health and will get certified in a
specific evidence based model, known as Managing and Adapting Practice
(MAP).
The time in which students meet with clients is flexible,
based on their schedule and availability. Because we work with children
and adolescents, afternoons and evenings are typically when sessions are held,
unless clients are seen on school grounds. There is a 5 day orientation
that is required in mid-August. The actual start date of training is September
9th and students can continue until as late as the following August
or as early as end of June 2015. End dates typically depend upon the
school. There is a stipend of $10 per hour and mileage reimbursement of
.56 per mile.
