RESIDENCE
LIFE INTERN – Chalon
Campus
Mount Saint Mary’s University
The Residence Life Internship is an 11.5-month, live-in internship reporting to the Director of Residence Life and Associate Director of Residence
Life at Chalon. This is an experiential opportunity and is meant to support an individual who is currently working towards a graduate degree related
to the field. The individual must use these hours to fulfill internship hours for their
graduate program. This internship takes
place at the Chalon campus
but will also require knowledge of the program
at the Doheny campus through collaboration on projects and monthly
staff meetings. This internship
is intended to support the goals
and mission of the Residence Life program and the Division
of Student Affairs. The Residence Life Intern will work
with the Director of Residence Life and the Associate/Assistant
Directors of Residence Life to develop
an internship which best
fits the Intern’s professional goals
and objectives.
Mount Saint Mary’s University,
Chalon Campus is located in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles overlooking
the J.
Paul Getty Center, the Santa Monica
Mountains, and the Pacific Ocean.
The Chalon Campus houses the Mount’s
traditional baccalaureate degree programs.
DUTIES AND EXPECTATIONS
ROLE MODEL
|
·
Uphold all
of the policies and procedures as
set forth by Residence Life and the University. Violation
of residence hall and/or
University policies will result
in termination of the
Residence Life
Internship position.
·
Communicate
with all residents, staff members, faculty, and guests in an open, supportive, and constructive manner.
·
Forge
strong relationships with students, staff, and
faculty.
·
Maintain objectivity and confidentiality in all sensitive
matters and abide by FERPA (Family Education
Rights and Privacy Act).
·
Understand the mission and
values of a Mount
Saint Mary’s
University education.
|
PROGRAMMING
|
·
Coordinate
and evaluate student programming process by working closely with the Resident Assistants (RAs) and Community Programmers (CPs).
·
Provide resources to help RAs and
CPs come up with program
and advertisement ideas.
·
Create
and submit program advertisements for the
Athenian Weekly, the MSMU Portal, and the Residence Life Office.
·
Assist and attend Central
RAP Conference by reviewing program
submissions, the delegation video, clothing, philanthropy,
nametags, banner and any other tasks
for Central RAP. The conference is a 1 day event, which takes place on a Saturday in
November.
·
Coordinate
two events the first
week of classes in the Fall and
Spring for residents.
·
Assist with the Fall Student
Resource Fair during the
second week of classes in the Fall.
·
Coordinate
resident appreciation events in the Fall
and Spring semesters.
·
Serve
on the Welcome Week Planning
Committee to plan for Fall
Welcome Week activities with Student Programming and Commuter Services and other departments.
·
Serve
on the Violence Prevention
Task Force and coordinate
a variety of programs with other Student Affairs departments.
·
Research best
practice standards for benchmarks and develop
into programs unique to our residential
life focus.

·
Maintain and update
social media sites
for the Residence Life
Office.
|
CONDUCT
|
·
Send follow up emails
to residents
regarding conduct and/or on-campus injuries, as assigned by the
Associate/Assistant Directors of Residence Life.
·
Meet with students
on Conduct or other resident related issues (policy violations,
mediations, etc.).
·
Be aware of student issues
and inform Director and Associate/Assistant Directors
if issues arise.
·
Uphold and
enforce University policies and procedures by understanding the Student
Handbook. If policy
violations are taking
place, they must
be addressed immediately.

STUDENT STAFF AND TRAINING
|
·
Create
and implement a survey tool to compile
feedback from residents.
·
Supervise and evaluate the
Community Building and Planning Staff (Community Programmers (CPs)
and Community Assistants
(CAs)) and
inform the Associate Director of any concerns
or suggestions to improve this
service. The CAs work in the Residence Desk and provide a variety
of services such as check
out items, keys for lock outs, and selling various items such as scantrons, snacks,
and other supplies to the residents. The CPs plan large
scale events, create educational boards
(inclusive programming) on the floors,
and hold monthly Forums for residents.

Assist in recruiting,
hiring, training and mentoring
of CPs and CAs.
·
Hold monthly staff meetings with the Community Building and Planning
Staff.
·
Assist with RA Selection through Group Process and
interviews. Give feedback in regards to Resident Assistant and Returning RA/HRA applications.
·
Assist in the planning for the Fall and Spring RA Training, and present in a
variety of areas.
·
Plan and
present one in-service training
session during a Resident Assistant meeting each semester.
The topic can be of
the Intern’s choice but must be relevant for the Resident Assistant staff.

DAY TO DAY OPERATIONS
|
·
Assume on-call responsibilities on weekends, weekdays and holidays at the
Chalon campus. This includes living in a university-assigned
room, responding to emergencies and providing support to the Resident Assistants (RA’s) and
Head Residence Assistants (HRA’s) as the acting
professional staff member of the University.
·
Assume after hours responsibilities by responding
to emergencies, questions,
and phone calls on the RLI cell phone and room phone from Residence Life staff, Security,
or any member of the University, even if you
are not on call.
·
Assist
supervisors (Director, Associate Director at Chalon and Assistant Director at Doheny)
with administrative tasks related to the internship and complete assigned tasks and paperwork within the designated timelines.
·
Upkeep and maintain
the RLI Operational Manual with current samples and information.
·
Attend meetings such as RLO Team meetings,
Student Affairs All-Staff
meetings, etc.)
·
Meet
with Associate Director on a
bi-weekly basis and with the Director of Residence Life twice a semester
to discuss
current and upcoming projects
and information pertaining to the Residence Life Internship.
·
Check RLI email
and box in RLO on a daily basis.
·
Perform other duties as requested (i.e., committee work, review/revision of policies and
procedures, etc.) in support of the goals and objectives of the Residence Life Office and the
Division of Student
Affairs.

INTERNSHIP HOURS
|
·
The intern
must complete 20 internship hours a
week as part of the internship. These hours must be
completed in the Residence Life
Office Monday to Friday between
the hours of 8:00 am and 4:30 pm during the academic year. One or two full days (8 am
to 4:30 pm) of the week
may be spent at the

QUALIFICATIONS:
·
Must be
enrolled in a graduate
program for the entire duration of their internship.
·
Must live on
campus in assigned room.
·
Minimum
of one-year experience in Residence
Life, Housing, or Student Affairs
is preferred.
CONSIDERATION:
·
Includes
partially furnished room at the Chalon campus (a parking
pass is not included).
·
Includes
board plan ($400 a month at the
Dining Hall) only when Food Services
is in operation. Residence Life
does not provide meals when
the Dining Hall is closed. Meals
plans are only for the Intern’s
use.
·
$3,000
stipend a semester ($1,500 paid in August/November and $1,500 paid in February/May).
INTERNSHIP:
This internship is for 20 internship hours per week during the
hours of 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday
through Friday,
during the academic year.

Preferred
Start Date: Monday, June 15, 2015 (negotiable).

Preferred
End Date: Friday, June 3, 2016
(negotiable).
·
The internship is only available as a 1 year appointment.
·
Vacation
time does not apply to this
internship.
·
Holiday pay does not apply to this internship.

Sick pay does
not apply to this internship.
·
This internship
is not eligible for any University benefits.
