Description of Institution: California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) is a mid-size campus in Carson, CA, that centrally located between the South Bay, Los Angeles, and Long Beach. Due to its location, CSUDH serves almost 80% of students are from the surrounding area. The student population is the most ethnically diverse CSU system, a Hispanic Serving Institution, comprised of 65% females, and returning adults seeking new careers. CSUDH offers the “highest in demand” undergraduate degrees in the field of business, science, communication, and liberal arts (NACE Job Outlook Survey, 2015).

Description of Career Center The Career Center at CSUDH provides services and programs that help students and alumni make an informed career choice, inform them on the expectations of the workplace, and connect them with prospective employers. Students are assisted via individual career counseling appointments, use of empirically tested assessment tools, workshops and panels on career topics, graduate school preparation, job search, large scale recruiting events, On-Campus Interviews, online internship and job postings, and a wide array of website resources. Description of Internship: California State University, Dominguez Hills' Career Center provides career counseling and employment services to current CSUDH students and alumni. We are seeking applicants for a Career Counselor Internship for the upcoming 2015-2016 academic year. Intern will be paid hourly. The Career Counselor Intern is provided training and supervision, and a private office with a computer and CSUDH email account.  After training and when the Career Center counselors deem appropriate, intern will assist with weekly drop-ins, critique resumes, evaluate and interpret career assessments, take individual career appointments, present workshops, assist with major events such as job fairs, and work on special projects.

Responsibilities: During initial training, intern will attend career workshops offered by the office, observe and participate in career counseling appointments, review and interpret assessments alongside counselor, conduct information interviews with staff to learn about the culture of each role, observe and participate in the critique of resumes, cover letters, and personal statements, and learn about services offered by the office and university. Intern will report directly to lead career counselor throughout the duration of their internship.

Through training, the intern will observe the styles of the different counselors used in the office, and when ready, will work with individual students on career issues using a comprehensive career planning model. By co-facilitating workshops with staff counselors, the intern will observe the diversity of practices and methods used by the staff to gain experience in a variety of workshops. The intern will later lead the workshops alone. If available, the intern will participate in other activities including but not limited to weekly staff meetings, meetings with career counselors, meet and greets with employers, professional development activities, and visits to other career centers.

Intern will have an individual project to complete each semester and that will be determined once internship has been finalized. In the fall, intern will participate in the Career and Internship fairs as well as Graduate School week. An example of the recent Fall project was aimed at revamping workshops which include choosing a major/career, writing a winning resume, and getting the internship you want. During the spring semester, intern will have the opportunity to participate in the General Job and Internship Fair along with doing drop-ins and resume critiques. An example of the recent Spring project was to work with the new social media intern to engage student population using technology and market the Career Center. These projects will give the intern concrete evidence of having contributed to the office and will enhance the intern's resume.

Internship Requirements:  
1.     Intern must have a BA/BS degree, have demonstrated interest in a career related to career counseling in higher education, and be enrolled in their 2nd or 3rd year of an accredited graduate program. Candidate should be eligible to receive academic credit for the internship. Candidates pursuing a graduate degree related to the field of career counseling will be given first preference.  
2.     Availability to work a minimum of 15 hours during scheduled office hours (M-F, 8am-5pm) is required.
3.     Candidate must have quality interpersonal skills, appropriate education on student development, past experience in providing direct services to students, and ability to interact well with faculty and staff. They must also demonstrate aptitude to work well with culturally diverse populations.
4.     Experience with computer-based career guidance programs is preferred. Familiarity with social media such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and experience using Prezi desired.

Salary: $11.28 per hour

Duration of internship:  Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semester. Start date is August 17, 2015.
