Soros Graduate Fellowship for New Americans

The 2016 Fellowship Competition

• Every year, The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans supports thirty New Americans, immigrants or the children of immigrants, who are pursuing graduate school in the United States. Full eligibility requirements can be found here.
• Each Fellowship supports up to two years of graduate study - in any field and in any advanced degree-granting program - in the United States. Please note that the Fellowship does not cover tuition for executive programs, accelerated Bachelor's/Master's programs, or online degrees.
• Each award is for up to $25,000 in stipend support (not to exceed $35,000), as well as 50 percent of required tuition and fees, up to $20,000 per year, for two years.
• New Fellows join a strong community of current and past Fellows who all share the New American experience.
• The application deadline is November 1, 2015 at 11:59 pm EST.
• The competition is merit-based. Selection criteria emphasize creativity, originality, initiative, and sustained accomplishment. The program values a commitment to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The program does not have any quotas for types of degrees, universities or programs, countries of origin, or gender, etc.
• The top 77 applicants will be designated "finalists" and will be asked to appear for interviews in New York City or California in late-January or early-February of 2016. The Fellowship program will cover travel and accommodation.
• The 30 Fellowship winners, selected from among the 77 finalists, will be notified in March of 2016. They will begin to receive stipend and tuition support from the program in the fall of 2016. If a Fellow is in the second-to-last year of their graduate program in the spring of 2016, when the new class of Fellows is announced, the Fellowship may approve special requests, under certain circumstances, to retroactively activate the Fellowship in order to cover that term.
• The first year of Fellowship funding cannot be deferred.
• Unsuccessful applicants are welcome to reapply in subsequent years if they are still eligible.

EXAM ASSISTANT

DISABILITY SERVICES AND PROGRAMS

General Responsibilities:

• Scheduling and overseeing testing accommodations for students with disabilities
• Proctoring exams to insure academic integrity
• Oversee testing at off-site locations when necessary
• Receive exam proctoring requests, exams, and other materials
• Supervise approximately 15 exam proctors
• Serve as a reader or scribe for exams when needed
• General Office Work (filing, phone calls)

·         Research Assistant-DSP and other databases

·         Cross-training with DSP Notetaking Assistants, DSP Counselors, front desk, etc.

Position Requirements:

• Enrollment at USC. Exam Assistants must be graduate students, preferably in Education, Communication, Public Administration, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, or Counseling.
• Work Study strongly preferred
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work in an extremely busy environment with many interruptions
• Ability to respond to the diversity of the USC Community
• Ability to maintain appropriate behavior in dealing with faculty, administration, and staff and to provide courteous services to students and parents.

Please note:  We ask that the exam assistant work 20 hours a week consisting of two full days and a half day.

Compensation: $13/hr

Hours Per Week: 20 hr/wk

Work Hours: 8:30am to 5:00pm, M-F

2014-2015 Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship

USC East Asian Studies Center provides USC undergraduate and graduate students with scholarships to study Mandarin Chinese, Japanese or Korean and East Asian area studies. Both summer and academic year awards are available. Website: http://dornsife.usc.edu/eascenter/flas

East Asian Studies Center 2014-2015 Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship

FLAS fellowships are provided by EASC's U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant for undergraduate and graduate study of Mandarin Chinese, Japanese or Korean and East Asian area studies. The purpose of the program is to enrich the nation’s pool of area and international specialists.

Summer 2014 FLAS Award

-$2,500 stipend

-$5,000 maximum tuition payment for approved intensive summer language program

-Summer FLAS fellows take an intensive modern language program equivalent to one academic year at an institution in the U.S. or abroad. Visit our website for example eligible programs.

Academic Year 2014-15 FLAS Award

-Graduate Students: $15,000 stipend, $18,000 tuition payment

-Undergraduate Students: $5,000 stipend, $10,000 tuition payment

-Academic Year FLAS fellows take 1 East Asian language course during both fall and spring semesters at least 2 area studies courses on East Asia at USC or approved overseas program.

-Academic year 2014-15 FLAS fellowships are contingent upon funding from the U.S. Department of Education

Eligibility
-U.S. citizens or permanent residents
-Full-time USC students from any major or discipline

-Graduate students: Engaged in advanced language study (3rd year and above). Those already fluent in one East Asian language may apply for beginning/intermediate study of a second East Asian language.

-Undergraduate students: Engaged in intermediate or advanced language study (2nd year and above)

-FLAS-eligible languages include Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, and Korean

Rotary Foundation Global Grants Information Session

Rotary Foundation Global Grants Information Session February 22, 12-1pm
Location: Leavey Library Auditorium

USC Professor Mina Soroosh, a Rotary Scholarship recipient, will join the Academic & International Fellowships staff for a presentation on the Rotary Global Grant Program (formerly Ambassadorial Scholarships). Rotary Foundation Global Grants support large international activities with sustainable, measurable outcomes in the areas of: Peace and conflict prevention, Disease prevention and treatment, Water and sanitation, Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy, and Economic and community development.  Projects must have a minimum budget of $30,000 and may include humanitarian projects as well as scholarship for graduate-level academic studies.  US Citizenship is not required in order to apply.
