Position: English Language
Arts Teacher
Reports to: Kirk
Kirkwood, Ed.D., Consultant
Summary: Under the general direction of the VP of Educational Services, the English
Language Arts (ELA) Teacher will develop lesson
plans and implement instruction in accordance with the curriculum provided
as summarize below:
Given the national
push for adoption
of Common Core State Standards, coupled
with the implementation of writing across all disciplines; this course is designed to educate 10th grade students on basic
expository
reading
and
writing
skills
and
strategies. Through the use of various
texts
and
corresponding
activities,
students
will
explore techniques that will help in learning
how to critically read, comprehend, and analytically write. All texts will consist of high-level non-fictional works, to include
The Gettysburg Address and Letter from A Birmingham Jail.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Provide instructional services for students
in 10th grade young men of color,
predominantly African American
& Latino, needing
assistance with acquisition of ELA Common Core State Standards
• Develop and implement lesson plans, activities, and projects for TFI Fellows
• Implement strategies to improve student’s comprehension and analysis
of complex literature, including
informational text
• Work with parents to understand and analyze the results of various assessments
· Collaborate with teachers to plan appropriate instruction for individual students
• Consult regularly with immediate supervisor, to address and resolve student
issues
• Attend and participate in our professional development and ELA planning sessions
• Maintain professional, courteous, and positive
relationships with students, parents, teachers, and other TFI Staff
Knowledge of:
• CCSS English
Language Art (Reading
and Writing) Anchor
Standards
• Computer software
programs such as, Microsoft Office
Ability to:
• Communicate clearly and effectively
•
Work independently and exercise initiative and good judgment
•
Collect, analyze,
and evaluate various
of student data
•
Work with an ethnically and culturally diverse
population
Experience:
Minimum of 2 years
teaching experience is desired
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree
and Credential (or working towards
completion) in English
or other English- related fields of study
Other Qualification:
• Valid CA driver’s license
• TB Clearance
• Background Check
(Live Scan Clearance)
• Must be creative and flexible in developing approaches to problem solving
• Excellent time management
and organization skills
• Service oriented
and open to new ideas
and approaches
Stipend: Negotiable
Schedule: October – May (Three Saturdays/Month); 9:00AM – 11:00AM;
Downtown Los Angeles
